TRANSIT at SEA
Horizontals and Verticals-in Transit 2
As an artist-wanderer I visited the Amsterdam Harbour observing and connecting with some ships, that were unable to leave. East meets West.Due to missing machine parts two very old large ships from Maleisia and Russia stay in the harbour for months. The crew, mainly from Malaysia, Russia and Birma are without legal papers, unable to get of board and in the city. They are puzzeld for months , how long it will take and are even without a lot of supplies. Only a pingpong table is present on board to kill the time. Is it enough to drive you a little mad?
As time passes, their thoughts start drifting in uncertainty. On some cloudy days I took their portraits and asked to write down their daydreams. The project , the photo’s and the quotes were purchased by the Nautic Museum of Amsterdam
(Scheepvaart Museum) Voices and pingpongsounds were recorded as well. The ball flips back and forth, but is going nowhere in endless repetion.
